Abstract

Abstract:
A prominent part of media discourse on individuality is today organized through representation of the celebrities. The article deals with the phenomenon of the celebrity discourse in popular media culture. A special emphasis is put on production and representation of politicians and journalists, the holders of institutional and definitional power as media personalities in local popular women's magazines. The primary concern of the article is the nature of discursive regime within which local personalities are represented in their private sphere, and the role of representations of a local celebrities in the process of "building the nation" in the 1990s. The article starts from presumption that public is more a discursive construction than a demographic fact. This means that "Slovenian people" are constituted through the way they are represented. The author wants to explain the way the stories of representative Slovenians constructs "an ordinary Slovenian" and public culture by creating a common world and by defining limits of possible self and definitions of individual and collective normality through the discourse on local celebrities.
