In this study, we aimed to determine the periodontal status of first-, second- and third-year
medical students. We examined 86 participants. To assess the need for periodontal treatment, we
used Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). Each participant was examined using 10
index teeth, probing depths were measured at six sites. We observed the presence of bleeding on
probing and the presence of calculus. We found that the majority of participants required at least
an improvement of oral hygiene; 52,87 % also required the removal of calculus, while 9,20 %
required scaling and root planing. Only 2,30 % of participants had completely healthy periodontium.
Statistical analysis revealed no statistically significant differences between genders or between
the intervention and control groups. However, a statistically significant difference in periodontal
status was observed among individual sextants. The population of medical students shows a
considerable need for improvement in oral health.
