Re-confirmation of the occurrence of the hermit crabs Dardanus calidus (Risso, 1827) and Dardanus arrosor (J. F. W. Herbst, 1796) (Decapoda: Diogenidae) in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic)

The article reports on recent, confirmed records of Dardanus calidus and Dardanus arrosor hermit crabs from the Slovenian part of the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic). The records are based on photographed and preserved specimens collected between 2018 and 2025. These findings provide reliable evidence of the occurrence of both species in the area and support the plausibility of previously uncertain historical records.

Abstract

Poročamo o nedavnih potrjenih najdbah rakov samotarcev Dardanus calidus in Dardanus arrosor iz slovenskega dela Tržaškega zaliva (severni Jadran). Najdbe temeljijo na fotografiranih in ohranjenih primerkih, zbranih med letoma 2018 in 2025. Te najdbe so zanesljiv dokaz o pojavljanju obeh vrst na tem območju ter podpirajo verjetnost o pravilnosti starejših zapisov iz tega območja, ki so bili obravnavani kot vprašljivi.
