Abstract

Abstract:
The chapter focuses on the cognitive consequences of long COVID. It presents cognitive difficulties in the acute phase of SARS-CoV infection and the post-acute consequences of COVID-19, which manifest as problems with memory, executive functions, attention, and information processing speed. It also presents the results of a Slovenian study. The chapter outlines the neurological and systemic mechanisms underlying these cognitive difficulties and highlights the importance of individual differences (age, disease severity, cognitive reserve, and genetic vulnerability) in understanding their extent and duration. In conclusion, the chapter emphasizes the necessity of a holistic, person-centered approach to addressing these consequences of COVID-19, integrating cognitive rehabilitation, mental health care, and appropriate social support.
