The closing length of the glow plug heating element is currently determined empirically in production, without data on its actual effect on glow plug performance. As part of this thesis, we therefore investigated the effect of the closing length of the heating element tube glow plug performance for diesel engines. We tested five closing lengths (5, 8, 11, 14 and 17 mm) on 150 heating elements. We analysed dimensions, resistance, and glow characteristics before and after further production processing. X-ray analysis was used to verify the internal structure of selected samples. The results show that the closing length has a noticeable effect on the length of the heating element and on its glow characteristics. The 14 mm and 17 mm settings stand out as the most suitable for use in production - the 14 mm setting is the most dimensionally stable, while the 17 mm setting is the most functionally stable. X-ray analysis showed that differences in glow characteristics are mostly caused by the length of the heating resistor winding.
