This article presents Slovene studies programmes at universities in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and North Macedonia, looking at eight institutions altogether, and compares their status with the situation in the 1980s, as described by Ivan Cesar in the anniversary issue of Jezik in slovstvo (Cesar 1985). Working 40 years later, the authors – university lecturers, professors, and lectors – emphasize an important role of these academic programmes in advancing the study of the Slovenian language and culture within their respective national contexts. They highlight the significance of work done in fostering scholarly research and in strengthening intercultural, academic, and societal ties. The results of the past work that include degree studies, diploma degrees, doctoral dissertations, translations of Slovene literary works, joint academic conferences and cultural projects, proceedings, monographs, and other scholarly outputs, attests to the substantial achievements since the 1980s, and the enduring potential to continue with the collaboration in the future.
