Abstract

Title:Mystical Realization in Advaita Vedānta and Meister Eckhart
Abstract:
This thesis examines the similarities between formulations of mystical oneness of human being and the Absolute in Advaita Vedānta and Meister Eckhart, asking whether the similar terminology reflects the same philosophical structure. Since the mystical experience itself is not directly accessible, the study focuses on how the experience of oneness is articulated and ontologically grounded in each system. The comparison proceeds along the metaphysical triad Absolute – world – human and concludes with the question of what becomes of the difference between the human being and the Absolute once oneness is realized. A marked convergence in descriptions emerges, yet it is embedded in two distinct ontological structures. In Eckhart, union is received, mediated and non-absorptive, since the created being remains distinct in its formal being. In Advaita, the removal of ignorance reveals that no difference between ātman and brahman ever obtained. The term "oneness" therefore does not designate the same philosophical concept in the two traditions.
