Abstract

Title:Pirates and piracy in the end of 17th century and the begining of the 18th century
Abstract:
The thesis aims to show the conditions for the flourishing of piracy in the so-called golden age of piracy, which took place from the end of the 17th century until the beginning of the 18th century. The period is very interesting and varied with many events that shook society as a whole and left their mark on history. The period is characterized by a varied intertwining of socio-economic social problems, rivalry between major naval powers and society's struggle for autonomy on the open sea. Piracy represented an escape from the economic and working conditions at sea at the time and the potential for huge earnings and eternal freedom. Meanwhile, when the world's superpowers saw piracy as a potential for undermining the power of their opponents and rivals, they secretly supported piracy. Such a complicated geopolitical situation was, of course, ideal for the flourishing of the pirate community. This is how pirate havens such as Port Royal and Nassau developed. Primary forms of democratic government were formed in these refuges, which were a great contrast to the previous world politics, where various monarchs ruled. The decline of piracy only came when these monarchies organized anti-piracy expeditions, hunting them down, punishing them, imprisoning them, and executing the most prominent pirates in public arenas.
