This thesis offers a deeper view on the motif of the dance of death, with the help of contemporary literary sources, such as philosophical works as well as the Holy Bible. It focuses on similar motifs, such as the legend of the three living and the three dead and transi tombs, which are part of a wider assembly regarding memento mori iconography. It also includes the possible theory of a potential early connection with theatre. As such three possible interpretations for the role of death can be found in frescoes from Hrastovlje and Berlin as well as the graphics by Guyot Marchant. These include a standard negative interpretation, a more positive view and a third ambivalent death.
