Abstract

Title:Trends in tropical nights across climate types in Slovenia
Abstract:
With the ongoing global rise in minimum temperatures, tropical nights are becoming increasingly frequent. These are nights during which the air temperature does not fall below 20 °C. They occur during the summer months and are most common in areas affected by urban heat islands. Their frequency, however, varies considerably across different climate types. The analysis covers all nine Slovenian climate types. For each type, a continuous dataset of daily minimum temperatures was compiled, in most cases by merging data from several meteorological stations. The study examines the annual number of tropical nights, their distribution across five year periods, their monthly occurrence, and the mean minimum temperature of tropical nights, calculated over five year periods. Particular attention is given to climate types in which clear trends in the occurrence of tropical nights are present.
