After the parish of St. Cantianus in Škocjan pri Dobu acquired the high altar from the dissolved
Poor Clare convent, it had to be adapted to the evidently smaller presbytery of the parish
church. As a result, its original design was altered, and its masterful architectural and sculptural
conception can no longer be fully appreciated. This final seminar paper presents an attempt
to reconstruct the altar of the former Poor Clare convent based on its original location in
Ljubljana, Andrea Pozzo’s architectural treatise, and comparisons with contemporary altars in
present-day Slovenia. Previous research on the altar and the convent is supplemented by new
findings based on comparative analysis and previously unpublished plans. In developing the
proposed reconstruction, particular attention is given to the proportions between the
architectural elements and the groups of figures on the altar, as well as to visual comparisons
with other altars, which allow for a more plausible understanding of its original appearance.
Despite these new findings, numerous questions concerning both the altar and the former
convent remain open.
