Abstract

Title:IMPACT OF WEATHER CONDITIONS ON AVERAGE DRIVING SPEED
Abstract:
The diploma thesis examines the impact of weather conditions on driving speed at four selected locations in Slovenia. The research is based on traffic data obtained from Sipronika speed measuring devices and meteorological data from ARSO and the ERA5 reanalysis for 2025. Road icing, fog, dry-road indices, and precipitation intensity were used to assess weather conditions. The relationship between weather conditions and average speed, maximum speed, and the percentile speeds V85, V50, and V30 was analyzed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and linear regression. The results show that the impact of weather conditions on driving speed varies across locations and speed indicators. The clearest expected effect was observed during intense precipitation, while the relationships associated with fog and road icing were generally weaker. The first and third research hypotheses were partially confirmed, while the hypothesis of a recurring trend across all locations was rejected. The findings indicate that, in addition to weather conditions, the characteristics of individual traffic locations also significantly influence driving speed.
