In this thesis, we presented different suckler cow production systems, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the factors that are important for the successful and economically efficient management of suckler cow herds. Based on a review of scientific and professional literature, we found that the success of suckler cow production is influenced by the selection of a suitable breed, high-quality nutrition, good reproductive performance, animal health care, ensuring animal welfare, appropriate
production technology, and effective pasture management. The production system should be adapted to the natural conditions, available agricultural land, and work
organisation of each individual farm. In the second part of the thesis, we presented our family farm, which is managed according to the principles of organic farming. Due to
the hilly terrain, the high proportion of grassland, and the existing farm management system, suckler cow production is the most suitable production focus for our farm.
Grazing during the vegetation period enables efficient utilisation of grassland and reduces feeding costs, while during the winter period, the animals are housed indoors.
Considering the characteristics of the farm, the most suitable system for the further development of suckler cow production would be a combination of grazing during the
vegetation period and loose housing on deep litter during the winter period. Such a production system would improve animal welfare and provide better housing conditions. However, the main challenge associated with its implementation is ensuring a sufficient supply of suitable bedding material.
