Abstract

Title:Processing strategies for a 3D-printed hip implant using robotic machine hammer peening
Abstract:
This work addresses robotic post-processing of the surface of an additively manufactured hip implant sample made of AISI 316L steel using hammer peening. We designed a clamping fixture and carried out the treatment using a robotic system using various process parameters. Processing forces were measured using a dynamometer, and surface topography was characterized using an optical measuring system. The results showed that favorable surface topography properties can be achieved for the application in question, with the spacing between impacts and the tool tip geometry having the greatest influence on the surface charactheristics.
