Phase change materials or PCMs store and release latent heat during phase transitions and can therefore be used for passive temperature regulation in buildings. Their effectiveness depends on their type, thermal properties, and method of incorporation into plaster. The incorporation of PCMs can improve thermal performance of plasters; however, some can be incompatible with the binder, and their incorporation may increase the porosity of hardened plasters. This can reduce mechanical strength and durability. Effectiveness of PCM-modified plasters therefore depends on the appropriate selection of the PCM and the balance between thermal performance, mechanical properties and durability.
