Abstract

Title:Sensory evaluation of creams with hyaluronic acid and hair shampoos with amla (Emblica officinalis) extract
Abstract:
Cosmetics represent a significant part of our everyday lives. Cosmetology plays a particular important role in skincare, where natural cosmetics and cosmetics from Asian countries are increasingly coming to the forefront. Given the wide range of products available on the market and the resulting intense competition among companies, they are striving to achieve consumer satisfaction, making sensory evaluation an important part of cosmetic product development. As part of the diploma thesis, sensory evaluation of hand creams and hair shampoos was conducted. The formulations of the products had previously been developed at the Chair of Pharmaceutical Technology, also for the purpose of a diploma thesis. The products were prepared in the laboratory, while their sensory evaluation was carried out in a home environment using the hedonic affective testing method. With the help of a questionnaire, 12 female volunteers aged between 20 and 50 evaluated their first impression of the products, their initial contact with the products, and their properties during and after application. Four different hand cream samples were included in the testing. The samples differed in the proportions of argan and avocado oils and in the incorporation of hyaluronic acid. As part of the evaluation of the hair shampoos, the volunteers assessed three different formulations: a basic shampoo formulation without added thickeners or a cosmetic active ingredient; a formulation containing amla and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; and a formulation containing amla, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and xanthan gum. The main aim of the diploma thesis was to investigate whether inexperienced volunteers would perceive differences between the products based on their composition. The evaluation results were analysed and compared. The results showed that the participants preferred the cream containing a higher proportion of argan oil and added hyaluronic acid. The volunteers pointed out that this cream was absorbed more quickly and provided greater softness to the skin. Differences in the composition of the shampoos were also perceived. The majority of the volunteers preferred the shampoo containing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, xanthan gum, and amla, as it produced a stable foam while also allowing for quick rinsing from the hands. Overall, the volunteers were satisfied with the products and indicated that they would incorporate some of them into their regular hand and hair care routines.
