The master's thesis examines the arrangement of Slovenian popular songs for school choirs and their pedagogical and musical-artistic significance. The starting point of the research is the recognition that Slovenian popular music plays an important role in the everyday lives of young people, yet it remains underrepresented in school choral repertoire. The aim of the thesis is to explore how this type of music can be meaningfully integrated into choral practice and what effects it has on motivation, musical development, and choral work.
The theoretical part presents the fundamentals of choral pedagogy, the role of the conductor, and the characteristics of vocal development in children and adolescents. Special attention is given to the pedagogical impact of arranged songs, which is reflected in increased motivation, a more positive self-image, the development of musical expression, and the socio-emotional aspects of group singing. The fundamental principles of arranging music for choir are also discussed, highlighting melody, harmony, rhythm, and lyrics as key elements of choral arrangements. The theoretical section also includes an overview of the development of Slovenian popular music and its significance as a social and cultural phenomenon.
The practical part of the thesis consists of arrangements of selected Slovenian popular songs for school choirs, accompanied by an analysis of the original works and a description of the arranging decisions. The focus of the arrangements was on adapting the musical material to the vocal abilities of youth choirs while preserving the character and recognizability of the original compositions. The findings indicate that not all popular songs are equally suitable for choral arrangement, as the selection requires careful consideration of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic characteristics. An important aspect is also the role of instrumental accompaniment, which often provides stability and stylistic appropriateness in performance.
