The purpose of this master’s thesis was to design a series of screen-printed theater posters to promote a theater play titled Konec Epohe.
The theoretical part of the master’s thesis uses various sources to describe the early development of the poster, followed by an examination of the evolution of the theater poster both abroad and in Slovenia. This is followed by a description of the various artistic movements that had the greatest influence on poster design in the 20th century. In addition, the history of the screen printing technique is described, and the process itself is presented in detail, from the preparation of graphic images for printing to the final print on the substrate. The thesis describes the required materials and what screen printing entails, both in terms of materials and the process itself.
In the experimental part of the master’s thesis, we conducted an analysis of six screen-printed theater posters. This section analyzes the compositions, the used color palette, the poster formats, and the hierarchy of graphic elements (artistic interpretations and illustrations, photography, and typography). The purpose of the analysis was to identify guidelines for the further design of a poster series. To carry out the experimental part, we used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Procreate. We used these programs to design theater posters and prepare them for digital and screen printing. The experimental part also includes a description of the production and design of a new poster series for the theater production Konec Epohe, as well as a description of the production of screen-printed posters series.
The final section of the master’s thesis presents final photographic, illustrative, and typographic elements. The thesis includes a content analysis of the creative work and the final result of the printed posters, including adaptations to various promotional dimensions and formats.
