This thesis examines the occurrence of colic in sport horses and studies strategies to reduce them by integrating nutritional management, transport routines and early recognition systems. The purpose of the research was to develop practical, evidence based procedures that are applicable in a competitive environment. The analyzed literature includes epidemiological and clinical studies and research. The findings highlight the important role of dietary changes, access to water, stable management, and transportation in the development of colic; in recurrences, dental pathology and stereotypies stand out. Studies results show that more than a third of horses that have been treated for colic with medication experience a recurrence within a year, with the risk being more than five times higher in horses with dental problems. An analysis of the knowledge of owners reveals that they often act too late when mild signs appear, which prolongs the time until veterinary treatment is provided. Based on these findings, the work proposes a set of preventive measures: gradual dietary transitions, hydration planning before and after transport, standardized protocols for monitoring vital functions, and clear time-defined rules for further action. The proposed measures allow for a reduction in the risk of colic and contribute to greater well-being and fewer interruptions to horse training and competition.
