Abstract

Title:Characterization of fir wood from Čadrg : B. Sc. thesis
Abstract:
In 2023, five silver fir logs were discovered in the vicinity of Čadrg village, and their age was determined to be approximately 6,500 years through radiocarbon dating. The aim of this diploma thesis was to investigate the anatomical, physical, and mechanical properties of this archaeological wood and compare them with those of recent silver fir wood. Due to long-term exposure to anaerobic conditions in sediment, the wood was relatively well preserved; however, partial degradation was observed. The results showed lower density and poorer mechanical properties compared to recent wood. The partially degraded wood also exhibited slightly better dimensional stability and similar sorption properties to those of recent silver fir wood. The results confirm that anaerobic conditions enable the long-term preservation of the basic anatomical structure of wood while also affecting its physical and mechanical properties. The silver fir wood from Čadrg represents an important natural heritage and also demonstrates great potential for use in the production of musical instruments.
