Abstract

Title:Comparison of the efficiency of TiO2 in the photocatalytic degradation of various organic pollutants
Abstract:
The efficiency of UV/TiO2 photocatalysis in the degradation of organic pollutants in water was investigated. Six pharmaceutical active ingredients and two textile dyes were examined. The aim was to compare their degradation and evaluate the effect of the presence of several pharmaceutical active ingredients in the same solution. The degradation of the active ingredients was monitored by HPLC, the degradation of the dyes by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and the degree of mineralization of both by measuring total organic carbon (TOC). The results showed different degradation rates of individual pharmaceutical active ingredients, with oxytetracycline (OTC) and naproxen (NAP) degrading the fastest. In the mixture of active ingredients, differences in the degradation rate were observed depending on the individual compounds. For both dyes, the absorbance during photocatalysis decreased significantly, indicating efficient degradation. TOC measurements did not provide sufficiently reliable results to confirm the mineralization of all analysed compounds.
