When translating texts, we often find ourselves facing terms and contexts that are characteristic only of a certain language or culture, which makes them hard to translate into the target language and culture. This means that every translator must decide how to deal with these elements. They must be creative and careful in their endeavour. In this master’s thesis, I am going to focus on dealing with these elements in novels. I am going to specifically examine the novel Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert, written by the Bosnian-German author Saša Stanišić, and its Slovene translation. The translation is the work of translator Marko Trobevšek and it is titled Kako vojak popravi gramofon. I am going to examine the different methods used by the author to translate culturally specific elements and elements in different languages of the novel. I am going to have a look at whether the selected culturally specific elements and elements in different languages in the translation are equivalent to those in the original novel and if they are in keeping with the culture connected to the language into which they are translated. I am going to look at whether the translator decided to transfer these elements or if he kept them in their original form, why he made these decisions, and whether the forms in the translation have the same or at least a similar effect on the reader as the ones in the original text. My wish when writing this thesis is that it will contribute to the field of translating culturally specific elements and elements in different languages into Slovene. It is meant to offer translators help with choosing the right strategy to translate these elements.
