Abstract

Title:The determination of total volatile organic compounds in indoor air
Abstract:
Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are organic chemical compounds that, due to their high vapour pressure, are present in the gaseous phase at room temperature and are released from sources such as building materials, varnishes, paints, fragrances, and museum exhibits. The aim of the experimental part was to determine the concentrations of total VOCs in spaces of different sizes containing various materials and objects of different ages. In addition, the purpose was to determine the influence of added fragrances and human presence on changes in total VOC concentrations. The measurements were performed using a portable Honeywell ppbRAE 3000+ instrument, which contains a photoionization detector equipped with a UV lamp with an energy of 10.6 eV. The calibration curve was established using toluene gas generated by a used permeation device. Measurements of carbon dioxide concentration were used to determine the air exchange rate in a room without ventilation and with closed windows and doors. Based on this, the retention time of the added fragrance in the room was estimated. The measurement results obtained in gallery, museum, and library spaces enabled the assessment of emitted VOC quantities and, consequently, the evaluation of indoor air quality.
