Abstract
Univerzalno motorno olje lahko deluje zadovoljivo tudi kot hidravlično olje. Če je univerzalno motorno olje uporabljeno kot hidravlično samo zaradi njegovega visokega indeksa viskoznosti (VI) – torej zaradi stabilne kinematične viskoznosti ne glede na temperaturne spremembe, potem to ni prava rešitev. Vse je seveda povezano z dodatki, ki dvigujejo indeks viskoznosti. Ti dodatki so relativno velike molekule, ki pri nizkih temperaturah ne zgostijo olja, pri višjih temperaturah pa tvorijo dolge verige molekul, kar posledično povečuje kinematično viskoznost olja. Prvi dodatki za povečanje indeksa viskoznosti, ki so bili uporabljeni v letu 1940, so bili iz stopljene gume. Dobri so bili za uporabo v motornem olju. Dodatki za dviganje indeksa viskoznosti so se v letih razvoja zelo izboljšali. Vendar so kljub temu tudi danes še vedno občutljivi na strižne napetosti med pretakanjem. Z vidika strižnih napetosti so hidravlične kapljevine najbolj obremenjene, zato se uporabljajo izboljševalci skupine VI.

Title:Tribological and functional limitations of universal engine oils in hydraulic systems
Abstract:
Universal motor oil can also function satisfactorily as hydraulic oil. However, if universal motor oil is used as hydraulic oil solely because of its high viscosity index (VI) – that is, because of its stable kinematic viscosity regardless of temperature changes – then this is not the right solution. This is, of course, related to the additives that increase the viscosity index. These additives are relatively large molecules that do not thicken the oil at low temperatures, but at higher temperatures form long molecular chains, which consequently increase the kinematic viscosity of the oil. The first viscosity index improvers, used in 1940, were made from melted rubber and were suitable for use in motor oil. Viscosity index improvers have been greatly refined over years of development. However, even today they remain sensitive to shear stresses during pumping.
