Abstract

Title:Image, word, and material in linocut
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between word and image in printmaking. It begins by presenting the broader context of their relationship, along with various types of artworks such as comics, posters, graffiti, and illustrations that unite them into a cohesive whole. The thesis then focuses on printmaking, particularly the linocut technique. Special emphasis is placed on my practical work, which will include an analysis of the prints. The research focuses on the materiality of the technique, examining various types of linoleum, tools, paper quality and printing inks, as well as their impact on the entire process from the creation of the matrix to the final print. Part of this research is also devoted to expressiveness in the linocut technique, which manifests itself through direct intervention in the material, specifically the cut and the strongest light-dark contrast. Throughout the creation of the prints, the research focuses on the relationship between word and image in this technique, whereby specific technical and material decisions influence the result of the print.

Keywords:artistic printmaking, linocut, word in image, the materiality of linocut, light-dark contrast, expression
