Abstract

Title:The Sense of Belonging Among First and Second Generation Immigrants in Slovenia
Abstract:
In my graduation thesis, I examine the sense of belonging among first and second-generation young immigrants in Slovenia and how it is related to the formation of their identities and everyday lives. The theoretical framework draws on theories that explain belonging and identity as closely interconnected concepts that are shaped through relationships with others, with particular emphasis on group boundaries and perceptions of difference. Special attention is given to the dual identities of young people who live between two cultural environments and to their experiences of acceptance within Slovenian society. The study also focuses on differences between the first and second generation in their perceptions of belonging, as well as on the relationship between discrimination and the sense of belonging. The empirical part of the study is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with young immigrants. The data were analysed using qualitative research methods with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of their experiences, identity formation, and strategies for navigating multicultural environments. The findings indicate that the sense of belonging among the interviewees is complex and is often associated with a feeling of being in-between the Slovenian environment and their country of origin. For most participants, a hybrid identity emerges through everyday practices, cultural influences, and interactions with their social surroundings. The thesis highlights the importance of the sense of belonging for the social inclusion of young immigrants and draws attention to broader societal challenges faced by immigrants and their descendants, such as social exclusion, discrimination, and limited access to education and employment opportunities.
