In the master's thesis, we examined tourism and cross-border cooperation between Slovenia and Italy in the Gulf of Trieste, where tourism is one of the most important economic sectors. Despite numerous advantages, tourism also has negative aspects; the challenges mainly relate to the pronounced seasonality during the summer months and the low visitation of the rural hinterland. This results in an overload of the environment and public infrastructure on the narrow coastal strip, as well as reduced competitiveness of the area in the international market. Another problem is the lack of interest among stakeholders in effective cross-border cooperation, which could otherwise lead to faster and more visible results. Based on a review of current literature and spatial documents, an analysis of the study area and a questionnaire conducted with municipalities, we formulated objectives and a vision for the further spatial development of tourism. The results of the thesis also include a proposed concept for the spatial development of tourism and proposed measures and guidelines for improving crossborder cooperation tourism development in the study area.
