The master’s thesis examines the spatial development of karst settlements in the Goriškokomenski Karst region with the aim of formulating spatial proposals and guidelines for their future development. The analytical section includes demographic and spatial analyses of the settlements, as well as an analysis of travel times by car from the settlements to major employment centers, transportation hubs, and facilities of general interest. Based on the results of the analyses, the settlements under consideration were classified into three categories: “poor,” “moderate,” and “good.” Seven settlements were subsequently selected for a more detailed analysis. The spatial analyses identified key spatial potentials and their development constraints. The results of the study show that the development of the Karst settlements under consideration does not depend on a single factor, but rather on the interplay of temporal accessibility, the availability of public services, the presence of public spaces, and opportunities for further spatial development. The preservation of spatial identity, a wellorganized village center, and the densification of development on existing designated building land were also identified as important factors in development. For two of the seven settlements examined in greater detail, proposals and guidelines for their future spatial development were formulated, which can also be applied to other settlements with similar spatial characteristics and development challenges. The proposed solutions are based on local spatial characteristics and the principles of sustainable spatial development, and they contribute to a higher-quality living environment, the strengthening of local identity, and the long-term development of Karst settlements.
