Bachelor’s thesis discusses an alternative and currently not widely recognized approach to pet nutrition through the use of insects. The goal of the thesis was to review and compare the nutritional value of insects and their comparison to farm animals, raise awareness of the good qualities they possess, and review their advantages and risks associated with being transformed and processed into pet food. The thesis was based on reviews of scientific literature. One of the many findings was insects' high nutritional value, primarily because of their favorable protein, faz and mineral composition. Research has also proven their good digestibility and their potential use for feeding animals who suffer from allergies. Insect farming is considered a more efficient and environmentally friendly production method. For efficient production, we would require less water and land for rearing and processing. A major advantage of insect farming is the lower emission of greenhouse gases compared to conventional livestock production. Despite the many advantages of using insects in pet food, we must not overlook the potential risks that come along. There is a risk of pathogenicity, the possibility of bioaccumulation of heavy metals, and also a low risk of allergic reactions. Based on the reviewed findings, insects have potential for sustainable use in pet nutrition. However, their future application will depend on consumer willingness and acceptance.
