The thesis examines the course, causes, and consequences of the decline and bankruptcy of Peko, the footwear manufacturing giant from Tržič, which represented the pinnacle of the town's long-standing shoemaking tradition. The study is based on media reports, the company's internal newsletter, archival sources, interviews with former employees and managers, as well as scholarly and popular scientific literature. It analyses the impact of the economic crisis in the final years of Yugoslavia, Slovenia's independence and the subsequent loss of markets, unsuccessful restructuring programmes, and compulsory settlements on the company's operations and the local community. The thesis also addresses cooperation within the footwear industry and the challenges faced by all footwear manufacturers in Slovenia.
