In the article we analyzed the status and development of Health-Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) promotion policies in Slovenia, based on 23 internationally comparable indicators. It compares them with other EU countries and proposes further development in this area. National data were collected in the first half of 2024 under the coordination of the national HEPA focal point and with the support of representatives from several governmental institutions. A comparison between countries was carried out based on the 2024 EU HEPA report and national reports. Slovenia fully meets 16 indicators, partially meets four, and does not meet three. Strengths include lifelong monitoring of physical fitness (SLOfit), the accessibility of programs at health promotion centres, and broad cross-sectoral funding. Weaknesses include the absence of national physical activity recommendations tailored to the Slovenian population, low competence among some healthcare professionals for physical activity counselling, a lack of support for sports clubs for HEPA, and a lack of HEPA programs for older adults. The analysis calls for stronger intersectoral coordination and systematic policy evaluation. Key actions include forming a national HEPA working group, involving non-governmental stakeholders to oversee the implementation of planned strategies, and adopting best practices, such as the PA-EPI (The Physical Activity Environement Policy Index) tool and a comprehensive national campaign. These measures would bring Slovenia closer to the most advanced European practices and improve the accessibility, quality, and effectiveness of HEPA promotion.
