Regina in coelum Assumpta : doctrine and image of the essential relationship between the assumption and the heavenly royalty of Mary

This article aims to highlight the relationship between the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and her status as Queen of Heaven. The article is structured in three sections. The first one consists in the analysis of some texts by many Church Fathers and medieval theologians that designate the Virgin as the Queen of Heaven. The second section exposes numerous fragments of medieval liturgical hymns that proclaim the raised Mary as the Heavenly Queen, Lady of angels and saints. The third section brings the iconographical analyses of seven paintings and sculptures that illustrate Mary’s Assumption as the crowned Queen of Heaven. Finally, the author drafts several conclusions from the comparative analysis of those texts and these images.

Abstract

Prispevek želi osvetliti odnos med vnebovzetjem Device Marije in njenim statusom Kraljice nebes in je razdeljen na tri dele. Prvi del obsega analizo besedil številnih cerkvenih očetov in srednjeveških teologov, ki Devico označujejo kot Kraljico nebes. Drugi del prispevka predstavlja več odlomkov srednjeveških liturgičnih himen, ki poveličano Marijo razglašajo za Nebeško kraljico, Gospo angelov in svetnikov. Tretji del prinaša ikonografske analize sedmih slik in kipov, ki Marijino vnebovzetje prikazujejo kot kronanje Kraljice nebes. Na koncu avtor na podlagi primerjalne analize teh besedil in podob oblikuje več sklepov.
