Good physical fitness is essential for quality aging as it reduces the risk of chronic diseases and improves mental health and cognitive functions. It is also a powerful predictor and an important factor in longevity. In this paper, we present the effects of physical fitness on the 'healthy lifespan' from the perspective of the individual and society. Slovenia is the only country in the world that has established a lifelong physical fitness monitoring system – SLOfit – complete with a variety of supporting elements. Coupled with a rich physical culture and other assets, this system offers Slovenia the opportunity to develop the population's physical fitness as a strategic investment. However, this requires a clear political decision.
