The world-renowned postmodernist novel Perfume, written by Patrick Süskind, is often discussed in the context of its exploration of scent, whereas I am primarily interested in the protagonist Grenouille and the female characters in the novel, both the so-called »mothers« who were a part of his upbringing and the victims, ultimately transformed into his work of art, the great perfume. In this context the inevitable question occurs whether the protagonist is capable of love – if he is capable of loving and being loved. At the same time, this is a novel that has also left its mark on Slovenian literature. The book has been a frequent topic of literary discussions and media coverage by numerous critics, and it has also left a mark on the average Slovenian reader, ever since its translation in 1987. Based on this, a key part of my interest lies precisely in the Slovenian reception of the novel and its resonance in Slovenian literature.
