Dura-Europos: Arheološke raziskave, najdbe in življenje v mestu

Dura-Europos je antično mesto v severozahodni Siriji. V okviru te diplomske naloge sta najprej podani njegova lega ter zgodovina. Sledi zgodovina raziskav najdišča, s poudarkom na izkopavanjih Univerze Yale in francoske Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres v obdobju med 1928 in 1936. Prikazani so okviren videz mesta, njegov tloris, in razvoj skozi zgodovino. Sledi poglavje o nekaterih pomembnejših javnih zgradbah znotraj mesta, in sicer krščanski hiši-cerkvi, sinagogi, mitreju, palači na citadeli, palači Reduti, imenovani tudi Strategeion, in palači poveljnika Dux Ripae, poleg tega pa tudi o agori. Opisana je zasebna arhitektura in predstavljen primer bivališča višjega sloja. Sumarno so prikazane različne kategorije drobnega gradiva odkritega med izkopavanji. Sklepni del diplomske naloge se osredotoči na zadnje obleganje mesta s strani Sasanidov in njegov konec.

• Title: Dura-Europos: Archaeological research, finds and life in the city

Abstract

Dura-Europos is an ancient city in northwestern Syria. This undergraduate thesis first discusses its location and history. It is folowed by the history of research of the site, with an emphasis on the excavations of Yale University and the French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, between 1928 and 1936. The approximate appearance of the city, its floor plan, and its development throughout its history are shown. The following chapter discusses some of the more important public buildings within the city, namely the Christian house-church, the synagogue, the mithraeum, the Citadel Palace, the Redoubt Palace also known as Strategeion, the Palace of the Dux Ripae, and in addition the Agora. The private architecture is described, and an example of a residence of the upper class is presented. The various categories of small artifacts discovered during the excavations are summarized. The final part of the thesis focuses on the siege of the city by the Sasanids, and its end.
