This thesis examines the issues of the potential construction of an asylum center in the municipality of Brežice, which, due to its location along the Slovenian-Croatian border, is one of the most exposed areas in Slovenia in terms of migration flows. Residents of villages along the border continuously face the consequences of migrant presence and border security measures, which have been a significant part of their daily lives for years. In 2024, the Slovenian government decision to establish a temporary asylum center in Obrežje triggered strong opposition from the locals and the municipality representatives as well. While locals support the operation of the existing registration center, which is intended for short-term accommodation and facilitates faster identification and documentation of migrants, they dispute their long-term accommodation in this area. Local residents are concerned about the location suitability and safety, while at the same time feeling overwhelmed. They also emphasize a distinct lack of communication with the state. Given the occurrent unstable geopolitical situation, migration will remain a crucial topic in domestic and international discourse, one that Obrežje will certainly continue to face in the future.
