Abstract

Title:Filip Terčelj and Alojz Rebula
Abstract:
The master's thesis, entitled Filip Terčelj and Alojz Rebula, examines, from both historical and literary perspectives, the life and work of the priest from Primorska Filip Terčelj and his literary representation in Alojz Rebula's novel Nokturno za Primorsko. The thesis focuses on the relationship between historical reality and literary fiction and explores how Rebula transformed Terčelj's life story into the literary character of Florijan Burnik. The first part of the thesis presents in detail the life and work of Filip Terčelj, with particular emphasis on his pastoral, educational, cultural, and literary activities, his attitude towards the Slovenian language and national identity, his persecution under the Fascist regime, his work in Ljubljana, and the circumstances surrounding his death. The thesis also examines the relationship between the post-war communist authorities and the Catholic Church and compares Terčelj's fate with other cases of extrajudicial killings of priests in the first years after the Second World War. The second part of the thesis is devoted to Alojz Rebula, his life, literary work, and intellectual outlook. In its central analytical section, the thesis compares the historical figure of Filip Terčelj with the literary character of Florijan Burnik and identifies which elements of Terčelj's life Rebula preserved and which he consciously transformed. The analysis demonstrates that the novel does not constitute a biographical or historical reconstruction but rather a literary interpretation of a historical figure, in which literature assumes the role of a space of memory, ethical reflection, and reinterpretation of the past.
