Abstract
I know that humanism is theoretically unfounded and ideologically problematic. But I desire to be human. I know that the idea of the human as the subject of a historical dialectic does not hold, but neither will I take the anti-human as the basis of philoso-phy. I seek another figure that can represent what is excluded from the human but also struggles to be human. The name I give to this inclusive exclusion, exploited by the guardians of humanity, is the proletariat. Through the lens of the excluded not-quite-human, I explore the meaning and economy of desire surrounding such not-quite-human figures as spectres that haunt the present, revenants that return from the past, and robots that point toward the uncertain position of humanity in the future.
