The thesis examines the development of school playgrounds and gymnasiums in Ljubljana from their beginnings to the present day. In the theoretical part, I present the general characteristics of children’s playgrounds, their historical development, safety aspects, and their importance for the proper development of children. I also outline some characteristics of gymnasiums and school gardens. In the following section, I discuss the development of the education system and physical education in Slovenia, from the period of Austria-Hungary to independent Slovenia. The central part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of archival sources from the Zgodovinski arhiv Ljubljana, specifically school chronicles of three primary schools in Ljubljana: OŠ Ledina, OŠ Ljubljana-Rudnik, and OŠ Vič. I also briefly present the history of each of these schools. Finally, I provide a short overview of the development of playgrounds at other primary schools and in different city districts of Ljubljana, and describe the current situation.
