Abstract

Title:Football as social capital : economic, social and health impacts of mass participation
Abstract:
Football goes beyond sport, serving as social capital with significant impacts on economic growth, public health, and social cohesion. The study conducted by the Football Association of Slovenia and UEFA within the UEFA GROW SROI framework revealed that mass participation in football generates broad benefits. Economically, football contributes tens of millions of euros and supports thousands of jobs. Socially, it helps reduce crime, promotes volunteering, and enhances educational outcomes for young people. Health impacts are even more pronounced, as regular football activity lowers the risk of chronic diseases and results in substantial healthcare savings. The findings confirm that football can be a strategic investment with high returns, strengthening societal resilience and competitiveness.
