Abstract

Title:
Textile reuse centre - Adaptive reuse of Žabkar's factory in Ljubljana
Abstract:
Due to the environmental crisis, we will have to radically change our attitude towards the environment and our way of life. One of the main polluters in our everyday lives is the textile industry. The main problems are the consumption of natural resources and the accumulation of waste, caused by excessive production and thoughtless consumption. To tackle the problem of textile waste, we need to consider how to ensure textiles become waste as late as possible. The aim of this master’s thesis is to research the infrastructure for textile reuse and its application in the built environment. With a well-organized infrastructure that enables sustainable behaviour, a sustainable lifestyle will no longer be a choice but the norm. As with textiles, the same applies to the built environment; we must first use what we already have. Each new intervention will require careful consideration; therefore, the emphasis will be on adapting the existing fabric. Through adaptive reuse, existing buildings are given a new purpose and reintegrated into the surroundings. A suitable location for a program aimed at raising awareness and educating people is in the city center, the centre of activity. The Žabkar’s factory is located in a busy area, and several changes planned for its surroundings will affect the area’s dynamics. The textile reuse centre consists of educational, research, and creative work. Their common point is the textile warehouse - a library of materials that becomes the central element, opens to the public as an event and exhibition space, and serves as an entry point, attracting users.
