Abstract

Title:Fighting against water › living with water : conceptual design proposal for youth housing in Celje
Abstract:
This master’s thesis examines a conceptual design for housing for young people in a flood-prone location in Medlog, Celje. The thesis is based on the interplay of two issues: the area’s vulnerability to flooding and the need for a high-quality living environment that would enable young adults to remain in the city. The theoretical part explores the relationship between architecture and water, as well as the transition from protection against water to coexistence with it. Water is treated as a spatial factor that influences the building’s cross-section, ground floor, accessibility, structure, and open space. At the same time, the project addresses Celje, young people, and the housing issue, and examines how architecture can contribute to better conditions for young people to live independently. The design proposal suggests a climate-resilient housing typology with elevated living floors, a fluid lower level, secure access points, shared communal spaces, and an open space capable of temporarily accommodating water. The apartments are designed as self-contained units, while the shared spaces enhance the living standard by offering opportunities for work, study, socializing, and community building. The project aims to demonstrate that the site’s flood vulnerability is not merely a limitation but can serve as a starting point for a different, safer, and higher-quality residential design for young people in Celje.
