Rural towns have long been facing the problem of young people moving to urban centers. The lack of quality content and spaces for young people contributes to their migration. In addition, industrial sectors are also leaving the countryside. Industrial plants were closely linked to the identity of the place in the past and had a significant impact on the economic and social development of the environment. Due to rapid technological progress, the development of new industries and the globalization of the market, these facilities are often abandoned today. Such facilities often arouse negative attitudes among residents, as they are no longer included in the development of the place and have a negative impact on the image of the surrounding area.
The master’s thesis deals with one of such areas, the former industrial area in Šmartno, where a meat processing plant once operated. The former Mesarija Litija was an important part of the town of Šmartno throughout its operation. Due to financial problems that led to bankruptcy proceedings, the plant has been visibly declining for more than 13 years.
The establishment of a youth center in this facility connects historical heritage with the needs of young people. The thesis explores the current situation of young people in the municipality and shows through analyses what opportunities are available to them. Despite the small number of residents in the municipality, young people represent a significant share of the population, but their opportunities for quality time spending are very limited. Most activities for young people are carried out in spaces that were not designed for such programs, which causes overcrowding and consequently user dissatisfaction.
The main goal of the thesis is to revitalize an abandoned facility into a modern cultural, educational, sports and leisure center for young people and the general public. The participation of participants in two surveys made it possible to co-create the program, spaces and operations of the youth center. With the opportunity for future users to provide their ideas and thoughts, spaces and programs can be designed in accordance with the needs of young people.
The master’s thesis also addresses sustainable principles in the revitalization of abandoned buildings and environmental protection. Given the historical role of the Litija Butchery in the development of the city, the project strives to preserve the image of the building. The thesis emphasizes the need to establish a youth center as an important space for the development of the local community and young people. The proposed design is based on sustainable construction, participation and local needs, whereby the project would contribute to greater connectivity and quality of life in Šmartno pri Litiji.
