Abstract
Naloga raziskuje aktualno temo družbeno-prostorskega povezovanja Nove Gorice in Gorice. Goriški prostor je v sredini 20. stoletja razdelila meja, kar je privedlo do izgradnje novega mesta ob starem. Mesti si že desetletja prizadevata ponovno poenotiti, ideja pa je ponovno postala odmevna, ko sta si v okviru projekta Evropska prestolnica kulture zmagovalni naziv prvič delili dve mesti. S sloganom GO! Borderless (slovensko: GREMO!

Title:Not here, not there : conceptual design of a multinational space in the border area of Nova Gorica and Gorizia
Abstract:
The thesis explores the contemporary issue of the socio-spatial integration of Nova Gorica and Gorizia. In the mid-twentieth century, the Gorizia region was divided by a border, which led to the construction of a new town alongside the existing one. For decades, the two cities have sought to overcome this division and reunify the shared urban space. The idea regained prominence when, for the first time in the history of the European Capital of Culture initiative, two cities jointly received the title. Under the slogan GO! Borderless, numerous projects were carried out between 2020 and 2025 with the aim of softening both the physical and symbolic border between Nova Gorica and Gorizia and fostering the reunification of the Gorizia region. Building upon this renewed vision of a cross-border urban entity, the thesis culminates in a socio-spatial intervention conceived as a catalyst for further development in this direction. The study first addresses the identity of Nova Gorica, which was profoundly shaped by the sudden division of the Gorizia region, providing a basis for understanding the broader context of the issue. The following section focuses on the implementation of the EPK25 programme, highlighting its achievements to date and identifying opportunities for further research. Through a synthesis of the historical development of both cities, from their origins to their present-day spatial and social conditions, the final part of the thesis investigates possible approaches to uniting the two cities while respecting the characteristics of the space and the identities of both nations. The proposed design concept connects the polarized cities through new temporary and permanent programmes capable of adapting to future urban needs, while recognizing the value embedded in their distinct and diverse historical trajectories.
