Abstract
V pričujoči magistrski nalogi smo poskusili primerjati dva slovenska prevoda dveh različnih francoskih del, in sicer vseh petih knjig Gargantue in Pantagruela (Gargantua et Pantagruel) Françoisa Rabelaisa v prevodu Branka Madžareviča in Okroglih povesti (Les Cent Contes Drolatiques) Honoréja de Balzaca v prevodu Antona Debeljaka.

Title:A Comparison of Slovene Translations of François Rabelais’s Gargantua and Pantagruel and Honoré de Balzac’s Droll Stories
Abstract:
In this master’s thesis, we have attempted to compare two Slovene translations of two different French works, namely all five books of Gargantua and Pantagruel (Gargantua et Pantagruel) by François Rabelais, translated by Branko Madžarevič, and Droll Stories (Les Cent Contes Drolatiques) by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Anton Debeljak. The introductory presentation of the authors, their works, and the translators and translations is followed by six chapters, i.e. six categories in which we compared the selected translations: compensation, archaisms, Slovenisation, notes, wordplay and neologisms. Each chapter consists of a presentation of the approaches taken by each translator, an analysis of examples from both translations, and a comparison between the two. An attempt at a superficial analysis covering both complete works has revealed that Debeljak, with his intuitive translation—which is stylistically heavily influenced by the translator’s preferences— to a certain extent paved the way for translations such as Madžarevič’s, which consciously and thoughtfully employ translation techniques, resulting in translations of the highest quality.
