Introduction: Anorexia nervosa is a complex mental disorder characterised by restrictive eating, an intense fear of weight gain, and distorted body image. It can affect various aspects of mental health and lead to somatic complications that may significantly impair quality of life. In recent decades, physiotherapy has increasingly been recognised as an important component of comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment for anorexia nervosa. Purpose: The aim of this literature review was to review the existing literature on the effects of physical activity and manual therapy used as adjuncts to the standard treatment of anorexia nervosa. Particular emphasis was placed on analyzing their effectiveness, safety, and the key parameters of their implementation. Methods: A literature search was conducted in the PubMed and PEDro databases using the following keywords: physiotherapy, exercise therapy, rehabilitation, massage, breathing exercises, and anorexia nervosa. Results: Five studies investigating the effects of different physiotherapeutic and body-oriented complementary interventions in individuals with anorexia nervosa were included in the literature review. None of the studies reported negative effects of the interventions on body weight or body mass index. The most consistent effects were found in muscle performance, particularly with resistance training, while positive effects were also observed in quality of life. Effects on psychological outcomes were less consistent. Discussion and conclusion: The findings suggest that physiotherapy has a complementary role in the multidisciplinary rehabilitation of anorexia nervosa, particularly in addressing somatic consequences of the disorder and supporting physical recovery. Individualised and professionally supervised physiotherapeutic approaches may represent an important part of rehabilitation; however, due to intervention heterogeneity, methodological limitations, and the small number of studies, further high-quality research is needed to define their effectiveness more precisely.
