In the master's thesis titled "Interaction between vocal technique and flute playing," we aim
to present the importance of knowledge and mastery of vocal technique for flutists and its
influence on the functioning of the musician's body, individual development, and their
musical performance. In the first part, we focus on the technical aspects of singing and
playing the flute, which connect, complement or even differ from each other. By exploring
the voice as our own instrument, we learn about the functioning of our body, we explore the
sound dimensions, and we transfer the acquired skills and approaches into flute practice.
Literature on vocal technique offers us a deep insight into the functioning of our body and
describes the processes involved in the technical mastery of the instrument in a very
systematic and analytical way. We highlight the influence of vocal tradition on the
development of the flute repertoire and list the most famous works based on selected opera
arias. We also pay special attention to the extended 21st century technique (simultaneous
singing or humming and playing) and present the ideas and musical approach of the
American flutist and composer of contemporary music Robert Dick. The second part deals
with the musical elements and the process of creating a comprehensive musical performance
– from initial preparation through the development process of creating the composition to
the final stage performance. We explore the role of singing in the development of musicality
and other musical abilities, as well as its power in creating a space for social connection,
collaboration, and valuable shared musical experiences.
