Abstract
The master’s thesis examines listening comprehension in the General Matura Examination for English between 2010 and 2024. The theoretical part describes the listening process in the first and second language, provides a research review of the difficulties second language listeners face, presents challenges in assessing listening ability and reviews the General Matura Examination for English, focusing on the structure and administration of the listening test. The empirical part presents the results of the analysis of the candidates’ comments gathered through the post-exam questionnaire and discusses how candidates perceive the listening part of the exam, what difficulties they most frequently report, and how these perceptions correspond to the average test results. The findings indicate that the listening part of the General Matura Examination for English is the most frequently criticised, despite candidates achieving relatively good results. The thesis also analyses the objective characteristics of the listening tests, including topic, text type, task type, length of recording, speech rate, information density, lexical frequency, syntactic complexity, time allocation, answer distribution and order, to examine whether candidates’ perceptions correspond with the actual characteristics of the listening tests. The analysis shows that the characteristics examined are relatively consistent across the years and that candidates’ perceptions partially reflect the tests’ objective characteristics.
