Based on the author's personal experience, the paper reflects on the development of the
concept of geodiversity in Slovenia. The development of this concept by researchers and
experts in the field of geology is briefly summarised. The discussion compares the concepts of
bio- and geodiversity. The latter cannot be implemented on a similar basis as the concept of
biodiversity. The definition of geodiversity is only possible on the basis of generally accepted
social values and an environmental ethic.
