Abstract

Title:Relationship between the strength of the extensor muscles, abductors and hip external rotators and knee valgus in three movement tests
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between hip extensor, abductor and external rotator strength with dynamic knee valgus in single-leg squat, single-leg drop and drop squat jump tests. In the study we included 29 female handball players (mean age: 22.2 years; range 18 – 28 years). We found a statistically significant small negative association between maximum external rotation torque and knee valgus in drop squat jump test (r = -0.37; p = 0.046), which changed to moderate negative when ONE OUTLIER was removed (r = -0.53; p = 0.004). There were no statistically significant associations between other pairs of variables. The greatest knee valgus was present in the single-leg squat and single-leg drop, and valgus values have a small to moderate statistically significant association between tasks. Consistent with most previous studies, we find that there is no association between hip muscle strength and the degree of knee valgus in the selected movements. In future research, it would be important to conduct measurements on a larger sample and to use movement tests that most closely approximate the injury situations.
